本套教材集听力、口语、精读、快速阅读、泛读、语法、写作和翻译为一体，重在训练和提高学生的听、说、读、写、译的英语综合能力。全书共分四册，每册侧重不同，但语法知识、各种能力的培养贯穿始终，难度呈阶梯性增加。
第一册侧重基础英语知识的学习，包括基本语法介绍、音标发音矫正、简单的阅读理解等，词汇掌握量在2000-2500个左右。
